Maria Bello is an American actress and singer who has appeared in several movies and television shows. She is also an activist, speaker, social impact investor, and a goodwill ambassador to Haiti. Maria Bello's career as an Activist began while she was taking up her major in Peace and Justice Education at Villanova University. She has worked with various organizations such as Save the Children, The Feminist Majority, Vital Voices, and Save Darfur with her main focus being the empowerment of women worldwide. Maria Bello is one of the founders of WE ADVANCE, a non-profit organization based in Cite Soleil in Haiti. It is an organization which aims to empower Haitian women to put an end to gender-based violence, while advancing women's health, safety and well-being throughout Haiti. While in Haiti, Maria Bello also worked with Artists of Peace and Justice to raise awareness on and help fund the alleviation of the extreme poverty of the place and the plight of the Haitian women and children. She also filmed and lead the media campaign to Elect Haitian Women, which was run through various TV and radio spots in Haiti. She blogs for the Huffington Post and has currently co-founded the Jacmel Development Group which is a consulting firm that aims to attract socially responsible investors to rebuild the town of Jacmel, Haiti and make it into a tourist hot spot.
