Patricia Velasquez Began Wayúu Tayá Foundation in 2002 as a nonprofit to improve living conditions for Latin American Indigenous peoples. The Wayúu specifically are a people of about 450,000 in the Guajira Peninsula of northern Colombia and northwest Venezuela. They are extremely poor and managed to avoid contact with Europeans for a long time. Wayúu Tayá also helped in Haiti with the Help Haiti Hope initiative (a jewelry piece with the logo sold for $10, with the proceeds going to children in Haiti). The Foundation will expand into other areas of Latin America and help other peoples. She is also a UNESCO Artist for Peace.
